UPI ID

Verdict

Type a UPI ID on the left — the verdict appears here as you type.

What is a UPI ID?

A UPI ID (also called a VPA, Virtual Payment Address) is the name@handle string that stands in for your bank account on UPI — India's interoperable payment network run by NPCI (the National Payments Corporation of India). The part after the @, the handle, identifies which bank or payment app (PSP) issued the ID — @okaxis is Google Pay routing through Axis Bank, @ybl is PhonePe. NPCI has 200+ registered handles; recognizing one only confirms the naming pattern, not who owns the account behind it.

How to Check if a UPI ID Is Valid

This tool runs four checks the moment you stop typing: the string matches the standard name@handle format; the handle matches a known bank/PSP pattern; the name before the @ is a normal length; and it isn't a placeholder word like "admin" or "test". All four run locally in your browser — nothing is looked up against NPCI or any bank, because no public API for that exists.

Valid vs Invalid — Examples

UPI IDVerdictWhy
ravi.kumar@okiciciValidStandard format, @okicici is a recognized Google Pay/ICICI handle.
shopname@yblValid@ybl is a recognized PhonePe handle.
9876543210@paytmValidNumeric local part is normal — mobile-number-style personal IDs are common.
admin@paytmInvalid"admin" is a placeholder word, not a real name.
test1234@upiSuspiciousContains a test-pattern word — could still be genuine, worth a second look.
user@gmail.comInvalidgmail.com is an email domain, not a UPI handle.
a@newbankSuspiciousHandle not in Toolsda's recognized list — common for a newer or regional PSP.

Why This Checker Beats a Plain Regex

Most UPI ID checkers only run a format regex like /^[\w.-]+@[\w]+$/ — anything with an @ sign passes. This one cross-references a real handle database and a blacklist, so it catches what a regex can't.

Disclaimer: what this checks

What This Check Can and Cannot Do

We check format only, not existence.

Can verify
  • Confirm the ID's format is valid (name@handle)
  • Confirm the handle — like @okicici — is a real UPI handle, checked against our database of 95+ handles sourced from NPCI and bank sites
  • Flag common typos and malformed IDs before you use them
Cannot verify
  • Confirm the UPI ID actually exists or is active right now
  • Check the account balance or the owner behind it
  • Confirm ownership — no public NPCI API exists for live existence lookups

Before sending money, send ₹1 first and check the payee name your own UPI app shows at the PIN screen — that is the only real-time confirmation there is.
