Quick Answer — How to File UPI Fraud Complaint
To file a UPI fraud complaint: 1. Call 1930 within 24 hours — give your name, amount, UTR, and scammer UPI ID to freeze money. 2. File on cybercrime.gov.in → File Complaint → Financial Fraud → UPI → enter date, time, amount, transaction ID, scammer UPI ID, phone, and upload screenshot. 3. File on NPCI portal: npci.org.in → What We Do → UPI → Dispute Redressal → Complaint → Transaction → Incorrectly transferred / Fraudulent. 4. Email bank with UTR and complaint copies. Banks must acknowledge in 24 hours and investigate in 10 days (RBI mandate). Keep all reference numbers. Last updated 12 Sep 2026 — MHA + NPCI.
How to file UPI fraud complaint on cybercrime.gov.in
Visit cybercrime.gov.in → click "File a Complaint" → select "Financial Fraud" → sub-category "UPI / Internet Banking / Wallet" → fill in personal details, transaction ID (UTR), date, time, platform, scammer UPI ID, and upload screenshot. The portal routes the complaint to the concerned bank and PSP for account freezing. Keep the complaint reference number — you'll need it for NPCI and bank escalation.
What is the 1930 helpline and how it freezes money
1930 is the National Cyber Crime Helpline run by MHA. When you call 1930, the complaint is escalated to the relevant bank, wallet, or merchant to freeze the defrauded amount before it reaches the fraudster. The first 24 hours are the "golden hour" — if the money hasn't moved to another account yet, the bank can freeze it. This is why 1930 is Step 1, not the police station.
How to file on NPCI Dispute Redressal portal
Go to npci.org.in → What We Do → UPI → Dispute Redressal Mechanism → Complaint → Transaction. Select the nature: "Incorrectly transferred to another account" (for wrong transfers) or "Fraudulent transaction" (for scams). NPCI will forward the complaint to the concerned PSP bank for resolution. Use this after your bank has not resolved the complaint within 10 working days.
What documents are needed for UPI fraud complaint
You need: (1) UPI IDs — yours and the scammer's, (2) Transaction ID / UTR (12-digit number from UPI app history), (3) Exact amount and date/time, (4) Screenshot or PDF of the fake payment or your transaction proof, (5) Bank statement showing no credit received, (6) Scammer's phone number and chat transcripts. UPI IDs, transaction IDs, screenshots, call recordings, and timestamps are all accepted evidence on cybercrime.gov.in.
What happens after filing the complaint
After filing on 1930: the bank is alerted to potentially freeze the beneficiary account. After cybercrime.gov.in: the complaint is logged and an FIR may be filed. Banks are mandated by RBI to acknowledge within 24 hours and investigate within 10 working days. NPCI forwards to the PSP bank for resolution. Keep all reference numbers — they establish a formal timeline for your refund claim.
How to prevent UPI fraud next time
Never accept screenshots as payment proof — always verify in your UPI app's transaction history or bank SMS from verified bank senders (e.g. VM-ICICIB, not personal numbers). Use a UPI Soundbox for audio confirmation of credits. Verify the scammer's handle at the UPI Handle Directory. Check if your UPI ID exposes your phone number at the UPI ID Privacy Checker. For "scan to receive" requests — that is always a scam.
